About Antigua and Barbuda

Antigua and Barbuda, an independent Commonwealth nation in the Eastern Caribbean, is renowned for its stunning landscapes and vibrant tourism industry. Antigua, the larger of the two islands, spans 14 miles in length and 11 miles in width. Its flat terrain was ideal for cultivating early crops such as tobacco, cotton, and ginger. Over the centuries, however, sugar cane farming emerged as the island’s dominant industry, flourishing for over 200 years. Since gaining independence from Britain in 1981, Antigua’s economy has shifted focus to tourism and related services, which now drive the majority of its economic activity. The finance sector and government services also play significant roles in job creation.

Antigua boasts around 365 pristine beaches with clear, turquoise waters, earning it a reputation as one of the world’s most beautiful destinations. Tourism remains the primary economic driver, contributing approximately 60% to the island’s GDP. The main markets for Antigua’s tourism are Canada, Europe, and the USA.

In recent years, Antigua has faced economic challenges. However, the government’s efforts, including the National Economic and Social Transformation Plan and a debt restructuring initiative, have been pivotal. A notable measure to bolster the economy is the citizenship by investment program.

The island is also enhancing its infrastructure to support tourism growth. A USD 45 million airport expansion project, which includes three passenger jet bridges and over twenty check-in counters, aims to improve efficiency and increase the capacity for scheduled, charter, and inter-island flights. Regular direct flights are available from London, New York, Miami, and Toronto.

The currency used in Antigua is the Eastern Caribbean dollar (ECD), pegged at 2.70 to the USD. As a member of the British Commonwealth, CARICOM, the Organisation of American States, and the United Nations, Antigua participates in various international organizations. However, its passport holders need a visa to enter the USA, as the country is not part of the USA Visa Waiver Program.
