The Commonwealth of Australia encompasses the mainland of the Australian continent and numerous smaller islands. Covering a vast area, it is the sixth-largest country in the world and the only nation to govern an entire continent. Australia was among the first nations to establish a modern democratic system, forming the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. It operates under a stable, liberal, democratic political framework consisting of six states and several territories. With a population of 25 million, most residents are concentrated in urban areas along the east coast.
As a highly developed nation, Australia boasts the world’s 14th-largest economy and ranks third on the UN’s Human Development Index.
Australia is a member of various international organizations, including ANZUS, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, the Commonwealth of Nations, the G20, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, the Pacific Islands Forum, the United Nations, and the World Trade Organization.
All foreign nationals, except New Zealand citizens, are required to hold a visa before traveling to Australia.
There are two categories of migration for non-Australian citizens: temporary and permanent. Temporary resident visas allow non-Australian citizens to stay in Australia for a specified duration for purposes such as tourism, visiting family, study, work, and medical treatment. Many temporary visas also provide pathways to eligibility for permanent residence.
